Careers Lab Resources

Careers Lab is a collection of off-the-shelf resources, available to both teachers and employers, to help deliver employer encounters in the classroom. It's a Business in the Community initiative which aims to bridge the gap between schools and industry by putting more employers into classrooms where, alongside teachers, they can deliver inspiring careers lessons.

The Careers Lab modules (or lessons) are designed to encourage productive conversations between people in employment and students who will soon enter the employment market. Teachers give an overview of the objectives and activities, deliver the lessons and mediate class discussions. Teachers will also invite the employer volunteers to give an employability perspective at each point in the lesson. They introduce their industry or profession, their company and what they do, and then provide continual input during the activities.

There are a total of three modules, each designed to be delivered as a one-hour lesson. Each has clear PowerPoint presentations, lesson plans and student worksheets prepared. The materials are aligned with Ofsted, Gatsby Benchmarks and with Government advice to help schools and colleges meet their careers education targets. Find an overview of the aims and learning objectives of each module below.

Module One: Inspire

Suitable for Year 7

Gatsby benchmark 5 is met during this session when an employer co-delivers the session according to the plan.

  • Broaden students’ understanding of the range of jobs available in the working world by exploring career pathways of the business volunteers.
  • Create a link between aspirational figures and the students’ own lives.
  • Identify the skills and qualities used in every job and to recognise their importance to achieving success.
