Our apprentice Darshan, shares his views on a year working at The Careers & Enterprise Company

After 12 incredible months, my apprenticeship journey is drawing to a close. It has been full of surprises, ups and downs and many great experiences.

When I first joined the company last September, I didn’t know what to expect, as it was my first paid role. I remember feeling incredibly overwhelmed on my first day; it was such a huge step-change from school and college, being in an unfamiliar environment and not knowing how to act and behave. But as I have progressed throughout the last year, these fears have diminished.

There have been many highlights throughout the year which have challenged me to exceed what I thought I could achieve. I’ll never forget spending an afternoon at a school in in Stoke-on-Trent with the National Literacy Trust where I took on the role of a ‘business adviser’. I was able to give a few of their young people advice about the world of work and help sharpen up their interview skills, before being on the receiving end of some pretty tough interview questions myself!

Undoubtedly though, the biggest moment of the year for me was co-hosting The Careers & Enterprise Company’s third Annual Conference.

Being asked to host such an important event was a great honour. At first though, the thought of speaking in front of an audience of over 800 was terrifying. I had some experience of delivering presentations to those within our office – but nothing on the scale of this! And with key stakeholders in attendance, it was crucial that I got it right. However, with a lot of preparation and practice with help from my co-host Alastair (which included projecting my voice at a tree), I was ready for the biggest gig of my career to date! The moment I got on stage, I felt a vibe from the audience unlike anything I had ever felt before. The nerves just went away and was truly one of the best experiences of my life.

Over the last year, I have been able to overcome the feelings I had at the start and really step into the job role and fully own it. I have worked with so many amazing people, from my colleagues in the office, to those across the network and as a young person myself, it has been inspirational to see for myself the fantastic work of our partners.

As I head off to university in September, I feel more prepared for the world of work than ever, and I will always be grateful to The Careers & Enterprise Company for this opportunity.
