The Careers & Enterprise Company, the CIPD, and Team London - the Mayor of London’s volunteering team - joined forces earlier this month to host an event aimed at encouraging more senior business professionals to become Enterprise Advisers.

The CIPD, the professional body for HR, led the event which was held during this year’s Volunteers’ Week. CIPD have been supporting with the recruitment of Enterprise Advisers across England since 2016 and have so far referred more than 1,000 individuals to the Network.  

Enterprise Advisers are volunteers from the work of business, who are matched with a secondary school or college to help them improve their careers support for young people. The senior HR and other business professionals who attended were able to learn more about the programme and, those that were keen to sign up had the opportunity to take part in a face to face interview.

Speaking at the event, Katerina Rudiger, CIPD’s Head of Social Impact and Innovation said: “As the professional body for HR and people development, our members understand where the skills gaps are and what employers want, making them well placed to be Enterprise Advisers. It’s been fantastic to be involved in supporting this programme and seeing our members make such a difference to the schools they work with.”

Aimee Higgins, Director of Employers & Partnerships at The Careers & Enterprise Company, said:

“The CIPD and Team London have been instrumental in building the Enterprise Adviser Network in the capital. Together, employers and schools are working together to shift the dial in careers guidance to align with international best practice, as defined by the Gatsby benchmarks.  As we expand the Network, we look forward to welcoming more volunteers to join this exciting programme to ensure all young people in London are prepared and inspired for the fast-changing world of work.”

Sharing her experience of being an Enterprise Adviser, Kim Travers, CIPD member and former Head of HR Services at Transport for London said:

“Although I am very experienced in all aspects of HR from the point of view of an employer, I originally decided to join the programme so that I could understand the perspective of schools and young people.

“Becoming an Enterprise Adviser has really opened my eyes to the education sector and I feel I have been able to help my school gain more of an understanding from a business perspective.

“Alongside providing strategic support I have also enjoyed supporting the school in a more practical way, via careers fairs and other activities. There are also business benefits to being involved; it’s important that schools and businesses are connected so that there is understanding on both sides.”

As a result of the event more than a dozen volunteers signed up on the day, and many more have registered their interest.
