The Rt Hon Anne Milton MP visited Walthamstow School for Girls yesterday to speak to pupils and find out how the school is preparing and inspiring its young people for the world of work.

Walthamstow Schools for Girls is part of the London Enterprise Adviser Network. The Network – which is delivered in partnership between Team London and The Careers & Enterprise Company – matches schools to senior business volunteers who support them to improve their careers education.

During her visit the Minister met with Year 10 students and took questions, including on her career as a nurse and her time as a Member of Parliament and a Minister. The Minister then met with Marianna Phillippou (Deputy Headteacher and Careers Leader at the School), Christine Hodgson (Chair of The Careers & Enterprise Company) and Daniel Chow (Enterprise Coordinator from Team London).

The Minister also met the school’s two dedicated volunteer Enterprise Advisers: Amy Smith, Head of Talent at creative studio Framestore and Dan Stanley, Founding Partner of consultancy Cohere Partners.

Apprenticeships and Skills Minister, Anne Milton said:

“It was fantastic to visit Walthamstow School for Girls and to meet the staff and students. With the support of The Careers and Enterprise Company’s Enterprise Adviser Network they are doing amazing work here to inspire and make sure young people have the support they need to make decisions about their futures.

“Enterprise Coordinators working with schools, along with the volunteer Enterprise Advisers from local employers, is how we give young people the valuable insight into world of work helping them make choices about their future.”

“It is vitally important that young people know about all the brilliant opportunities that are available to them. I congratulate the school and The Careers and Enterprise Company on their great work, and I look forward to hearing more about the progress they make.”

Marianna Phillippou, Deputy Headteacher and Careers Leader at the School, said:

“We were very pleased to welcome The Minister of State for Apprenticeships and Skills, Anne Milton MP, to our community school, Walthamstow School for Girls today. It has been an excellent opportunity for our Year 10 students to engage with a member of the government and one who is also a positive female role model for them.”

“We are passionate about encouraging all of our students to have the highest aspirations for themselves and to be fully prepared for life after they leave us. It was also a valuable opportunity to share the extensive careers provision we offer and the excellent support we receive from The Careers and Enterprise Company.”

Christine Hodgson, Chairman of The Careers & Enterprise Company, said:
“It’s great to have this opportunity to bring the Minister to a school that is doing so much to support the aspirations and choices of its students. We’re delighted that through the Enterprise Adviser Network, we’ve been able to support schools in this work."

“Careers education in this country is improving, and Walthamstow School for Girls is a great example of that. But there is still a long way to go for before every young person gets the support they need, so we’re delighted that the Minister is fully behind this agenda.”
