Since October 2015 The Gatsby Charitable Foundation has been running a pilot in the North East Local Enterprise Partnership area based on the Gatsby Benchmarks of Good Career Guidance.

In September 2018, the government’s Careers Strategy asked us to scale up this model by establishing 20 Careers Hubs across the country.

The initial pilot will run for two academic years, from September 2018 to July 2020. Since the first 20 Hubs were launched, we have done some testing and evaluating to see whether being part of a Careers Hub helps secondary schools and colleges accelerate their progress towards meeting the Gatsby Benchmarks and improve outcomes for young people in the local area.

Data shows that schools and colleges in this first wave of Careers Hubs are already outperforming the national average across all aspects of careers education nationally. After two terms, schools and colleges which are part of the first wave of Hubs are:

  • outperforming the national average on every single one of the eight Gatsby Benchmarks of good careers guidance
  • the majority (58%) are providing every student with regular encounters with employers
  • the majority (52%) are providing every student with workplace experiences such as work experience, shadowing or workplace visits

As a result, we have launched 18 new and two expanded Careers Hubs, backed by a further £2.5m investment from the government. Just over 1,300 secondary schools and colleges (around a quarter of those in England) will now benefit from being part of a Careers Hub.
