About Us

Our mission is to prepare and inspire young people for the fast-changing world of work.

The Careers & Enterprise Company was established by government in 2015 to provide strategic coordination for schools and colleges, employers, funders and careers programme providers. Together, we aim to create high impact careers support for young people.

We have developed our Enterprise Adviser Network at the heart of our work. Working closely on the ground with all 38 Local Enterprise Partnerships, the network continues to grow and now includes more than 2,000 schools and colleges.

At the same time, our grants have provided funding to take proven careers programmes into areas of greatest need. The 2015 Investment Fund has completed delivery and resulted in 380,000 new encounters for young people.

The Careers Strategy

The government’s Careers Strategy, published in December 2017, expanded the role of The Careers & Enterprise Company to work across all the Gatsby Benchmarks and cover broader levels of provision.  Our Implementation Plan, published in April 2018, sets out our plan:

1. Roll out employer engagement everywhere

We will be expanding the Enterprise Advisor Network to make it available to every school and college in England by 2020.  We will provide funding to support employer engagement in areas of greatest need. We will also triple the number of Cornerstone Employers to 150.

2. Scale up Gatsby Benchmarks and Careers Leaders

We will continue to support schools and colleges, including resources and digital tools, so that they can provide excellent careers provision for all young people, based on the Gatsby Benchmarks. We are establishing 20 Careers Hubs across the country and supporting schools and colleges to put in place a Careers Leader, including a fund to train at least 500 Careers Leaders.

3. Test, evaluate and share best practice

We will test new approaches, gain an understanding of what works, and share this knowledge with schools, colleges, employers and providers. This includes how best to engage young people with STEM careers, support young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities and carry out careers activities in primary schools.

As we move forward with the implementation, we would welcome more examples of work taking place particularly in STEM, SEND, primary schools and personal guidance. To contribute your examples, please contact us at careers.strategy@careersandenterprise.co.uk.
