The Careers Leader role is one of the most exciting roles within a school or college context with the potential to impact thousands of students in the short and long term.

This short course is designed to provide foundational knowledge for Careers Leaders and those interested in the role. It has been developed using Teach First's experience of delivering Careers Leader training since 2015, the expertise of The Careers & Enterprise Company, and a range of external experts including experienced Careers Leaders. This free course comprises five modules that each take approximately two hours to complete.

By the end of the course, you will have:

  • Outlined a career guidance development plan that supports the school or college to achieve the Gatsby Benchmarks.
  • Identified how you will lead others to deliver, refine and quality assure the career guidance development plan.
  • Outlined a plan to manage your own development as a Careers Leader.

Course Outline

Module 1 - Reviewing your school or college provision against the Gatsby Benchmarks

You will develop knowledge of the Gatsby Benchmarks and definitions of best practice. You will review the school or college's current provision using the Compass Tool and recent destination data.

Module 2 - Preparing young people for their future

We will summarise current Labour Market trends and progression route options and you will explore what students need from a careers programme.

Module 3 - Maximising Internal Resource

We will clarify the best use of internal resources to achieve effective careers guidance and you will explore techniques for engaging school/college stakeholders.

Module 4 - Engaging External Stakeholders

You will consider how best to grow your school or college's external network and examine how external links can be maximised in order to improve careers guidance.

Module 5 - Pulling it all together

You will build knowledge of how to set priority SMART targets and select appropriate actions to achieve them, introduce approaches to reviewing, monitoring and evaluating progress and review progress towards development goals.
